Fulbright M.A. TESOL

Overview

The U.S. Embassy Regional English Language Office invites applications for a new program aimed at strengthening English language teaching capacity in South Africa.  As of 2007, we no longer administer the Summer English Teaching Institute (SETI), a six-week program held annually since 1986.  Instead, resources have been redirected to fund qualified candidates for placement in U.S. Masters degree programs in TESOL – the Teaching of English to Speakers of Other Languages.

Program details

Selected applicants will be afforded an opportunity to obtain a Masters degree in TESOL at participating U.S. universities.

 Eligibility Criteria

  • Bachelors or honours degree in English
  • Limited or no previous experience in the U.S.
  • Candidates must be citizens or nationals of South Africa or permanent residents qualified to hold a valid South African passport
  • Candidates must be committed to work at an institution in South Africa upon completion of their designated program; there will be no opportunities under this program to pursue an additional degree in the United States following the completion of the Masters program.
  • Required Test of English as a Foreign Languate (TOEFL) score- after application
  • Graduate Records Exam (GRE)- after application

Desirable Qualifications

  • GET, FET or university teacher or lecturer of English
  • A minimum of two years of experience teaching English

The deadline for Preliminary Applications is 20 April 2009.  Interviews will be scheduled in May 2009. Successful applicants will take TOEFL and GRE after interviews.
