This program is open to South African University faculties or departments to apply for an American academic or professional specialist to visit their institution for a minimum of 14 days and a maximum of 42 days.  Please note that travel days, weekends and public holidays are included in this timeframe.

Fulbright Specialist activities will be designed to provide U.S. faculty and professionals with opportunities to collaborate with South African professional counterparts on curriculum and faculty development, institutional planning and a variety of other activities.

The goal of the program is to increase participation of leading U.S. scholars and professionals in Fulbright academic exchanges, encourage new activities that go beyond the traditional Fulbright activities of lecturing and research, and to promote increased connections between U.S. and non-U.S. post-secondary academic institutions.

Specialists may:

  • Conduct needs assessments, surveys, institutional or programmatic research;
  • Take part in specialized academic programs and conferences in conjunction with other scheduled activities;
  • Consult with administrators and instructors of post-secondary institutions on faculty development;
  • Present lectures at graduate and undergraduate levels;
  • Participate in or lead seminars or workshops at overseas academic institutions;
  • Develop and/or assess academic curricula or educational materials;
  • Conduct teacher-training programs at the tertiary level.

Please Note:

  • Research is not funded via the Fulbright Specialists Program (FSP)
  • The Senior Specialist Program covers the grantee's international airfare as well as a daily honorarium for the grantee.
  • The South African host academic institution will be expected to cover the U.S. specialist’s lodging, meals and in-country travel.
  • For information on disciplines and subdisciplines that are eligible for funding through the FSSP, please CLICK HERE
  • The South African institution may request a specialist to assist them with one or more of the activities listed above.  Appointments will be made from a pool of specialists on the Fulbright Specialist Roster, already selected through peer review by U.S. Selection panels.  These specialists include the most senior and experienced faculty and researchers in the U.S.   For open requests, a minimum of three months is required to process the grant after it has been approved by the Fulbright office.
  • The South African institution may also request a specialist who is on the roster by name.  For named requests from the roster, a minimum of three months is required to process the grant after it has been approved by the Fulbright office.
  • The South African institution may also request a specialist who is NOT on the roster.   The specialist will be required to apply for acceptance to the roster in order to be registered as a Senior Specialist with the Council for the Exchange of Scholars (CIES). CLICK HERE to register. It is advisable that the specialist apply at the same time as the request is submitted to the US Embassy Fulbright Office in Pretoria. Please consult the attached roster application guidelines and review calendar.  For named requests not on the roster, a minimum of four months is required to process the grant after it has been approved by the Fulbright office.
