President-Elect Barack Obama's South African Connection

President Barack Obama visited South Africa in August 2006 in his official capacity as Senator for Illinois. He  spent time in Gauteng and Cape Province, visiting several South African institutions and landmarks as well as programs supported by the U.S. Diplomatic Mission

Barack Obama paid a visit to  the the U.S. Consulate's Rosa Parks Reading Room in Soweto. Here he views U.S. civil rights activist Rosa Parks signed biography, which she donated to the reading room which is named in her honor.

At the Hector Pieterson Museum, Soweto, Hector Pieterson's sister, Antoinette Sithole, led the Senator on a tour, during which the Senator remarked that the Soweto uprisings inspired him to get involved in politics. At the end of the tour, Senator Obama laid a wreath at the museum's memorial.
