Borlaug Fellows Take Home New Knowledge
December 10, 2009 South Africans from the Norman E. Borlaug International Agriculture Science and Technology Fellows Program recently completed their studies at the College of Agriculture, Food and Natural Resources. The fellows will now go home to implement what they have learned. The program is operated by the US Department of Agriculture.

FIFA's Football for Hope Center opens in Khayelitsha
December 7, 2009 FIFA’s first Football for Hope Center opened December 5, one day after the World Cup draw, in Khayelitsha on the outskirts of Cape Town. U.S. Ambassador Donald Gips, and Consul General Dr Alberta Mayberry, joined FIFA's Joseph Blatter and local dignitaries to celebrate the opening of this PEPFAR supported program.

Graduating English Access Microscholarship Students
December 2, 2009 Ambassador Gips yesterday awarded 59 certificates of achievement to graduating English Access Microscholarship students. The Embassy's Access program in South Africa offers two years of after-school English study to secondary school students in Mamelodi, Pretoria, Alexandra, Soweto, PE and Kayamandi.

16 Days of Activism
November 25, 2009 Each year since 1991, tens of thousands of activists from every region of the world have taken part in the 16 Days of Activism Against Gender Violence Campaign. The Story of Barack Obama
November 16, 2009 South African author and academic Dr. Mukanda Mabonso Mulemfo who has just published his latest children's book, ‘The Story of Barack Obama’, visited Abassador Gips at the US Embassy, donating a number of these books to the U.S. Government. Several of the donated books will soon be in the Mission's libraries which serve South African communities.

Ambassador Donald Gips and his family's day in Langa
November 7, 2009 Ambassador Gips and his family spent the day in Langa, one of the oldest townships in S.A. They visited Siyaphambili orphan village and later the Love Life Center. They saw performances of traditional dance, took part in group discussions, and presented books for Siyaphambili’s after-school reading program.

San Juan makes historic visit to South Africa
November 4, 2009 Los Angeles-class attack submarine USS San Juan (SSN 751) pulled into Simonstown, South Africa, Nov. 4, setting the stage for a series of first-ever, at-sea engagements with the South African Navy submarine force. The San Juan was escorted to the Simonstown Naval Base by two South African subs,the SAS Charlotte Maxexe and the SAS Queen Modjadji.

American “Citizen Ambassador” Librarians Visit South Africa

Ambassador Gips Visits North West Province
October 7, 2009 Ambassador Gips visits the children of Tsholofelo, a children’s services project funded by an Embassy community grant. Tsholofelo, one of the Grant recipients in the Mafikeng area, offers preschool education to 84 children, provides home-based health care to some 500 patients, and visits another 300 children in their homes.

July 24, 2009 Sibulele Mjingwana, 16, a Grade 11 pupil at Port Elizabeth‘s Walmer High School, had one important stop before catching a plane to the United States: the American Library in Pretoria. Sibulele spent several hours reading about the country he was about to visit for three weeks, after participation in a program sponsored by the US Embassy.

Peace Corps Volunteers

Rosa Parks Small Business Corner
March 10, 2009 JOHANNESBURG: Consul General Andrew A. Passen opened the Small Business Corner at the Rosa Parks Library in Soweto. February 11, 2009. Biology students packed the auditorium in the Mae Jemison Science Reading Room to hear a presentation on human evolution. Afterwards, they lined up to become members of the Reading Room, adding to the growing number of school children who are delighted by the books, magazines and Internet resources offered at this US Embassy sponsored center.
