Sibulele Mjingwana, 16, a Grade 11 pupil at Port Elizabeth‘s Walmer High School, had one important stop before catching a plane to the United States: the American Library in Pretoria. Sibulele spent a couple of hours reading about the country he was about to visit for three weeks.
Sibulele was selected last year to participate in a two-year English Access Microscholarship Program in Port Elizabeth. Similar programs are being run in Pretoria and Soweto.
He explains this initial selection, and then his selection for a three-week tour of the United States:
“Our English teacher from my school in P.E. had to choose students who were "bright" (if I may say) and they had to write an essay. I was fortunate enough to be 1 of those students and I promised to put my best effort in everything that was required. THEN...we went for camping in North West for six days and I strongly believe that that was to test our behavior. I guess I behaved well then... coz here I am...at this overwhelming position.”
