Students Attend Lecture on Human Evolution at the Mae Jemison U.S. Science Reading Room

February 11, 2009

Sixty Grade 12 biology students and their teachers from three schools in Mamelodi packed the auditorium in the Mae Jemison U.S. Science Reading Room to hear a presentation on human evolution by Pretoria Girls’ High senior biology teacher Mrs. Eugenia Russell.

Using a colorful PowerPoint slide show and various primate skulls to illustrate her lecture, Mrs. Russell kept her audience enthralled for over an hour.  She pointed out that the following day – February 12 – marked the 200th birthday of Charles Darwin, briefly discussing his theory of natural selection.

The teachers and students quickly snapped up copies of articles downloaded from the Science Reference Center database, as well as copies of the recent IIP publication celebrating the birth of Abraham Lincoln, also on February 12, 1809.

Afterwards, the students lined up to become members of the Reading Room, adding to the growing number of local school children who are delighted by the books, magazines and Internet resources they can  access at the US Embassy-sponsored Mae Jemison Reading Room.
