Opening of the U.S. Health Kiosk

September 12, 2008

PRETORIA, September 12- An enthusiastic crowd of more than 150 community members joined U.S. Embassy officers and City of Tshwane representatives in celebrating the opening of the U.S. Health Information Kiosk at the Stanza Bopape community library in Mamelodi, a township North-East of Pretoria. Minister Counselor for Public Affairs Mary Deane Conners and Health Attaché Dr. Mary Fanning delivered remarks. Dr Fanning shared the ribbon-cutting honors with City of Tshwane Councilor Sarah Kgashane.  In between, young performers entertained the audience with traditional song and dance.

The kiosk is funded by the President's Emergency Plan for Aids Relief. It has over 200 books, magazines and DVDs on health topics, especially HIV/AIDS, as well as five internet accessible computers. It will provide platform for Embassy outreach programs to youth and community-based organizations. This is the first of several specialized reading rooms that the Embassyis establishing at community libraries in the Gauteng province.
