"Books in a Cage" ... "Free Us.  Read Us."

August 1, 2008

English Language Office book donation and presentation to students, teachers and teacher trainers in Ga-Matlala Village, Limpopo Province

On July 29th Regional English Language Officer Eran Williams visited the Jonas Lesetja Primary School in Limpopo Province with five district officials to demonstrate and donate a 250-book mobile library designed specifically for primary school students.

In an attempt to remedy low literacy rates  schools have been asked to implement a 30-minute reading period during the school day by the Department of Education.  This would have been difficult as the 190 students had no books to read, not even textbooks.

The book collection and its “cage” were conceived and designed by the  Regional English Language Office and 13 “Books in a Cage” emblazoned with the placard “Free Us.  Read Us.”  are being donated.
