The goal of the U.S. Embassy's Regional English Language Office is to improve English language learning and the effective use of English as an academic and professional medium in Southern Africa. Picturing Hope: Photography Project for Orphans in Eastern Cape
Embassy's English Language Office supports the Project
July 31, 2008
Scott Chiverton, an American educational exchange teacher, carried out the “Picturing Hope” photography project between the months of March and June of 2008 for ten primary-school-aged children at the Clover Home of Hope, Ncera Village, Eastern Cape, one of the poorest provinces in South Africa.
Through a grant from the Embassy's English Language Office, Scott purchased cameras and met every Friday with the ten kids from Ncera village, teaching them photography and English and sending them into the community to document their lives. With Scott’s guidance the ten orphans then wrote essays to accompany their photographs. The culmination of this project will be a compilation of these efforts into a published book with proceeds hopefully funding further such projects.
Scott is one of the English Language Fellows on an educational exchange program run by the English Language Office. He is spending an academic year teaching at a South African educational institution. These programs have the goal of improving English language teaching capacity and skills in South Africa. South African educators taking part in the program similarly spend a year in the United States.
