Marines Donate Toys to Kids for Christmas
December 2007
Cape Town - The Marine Security Guard Detachment, U.S. Consulate Cape Town, donated toys to kids in Khayelitsha, Cape Town, for Christmas.
The Toys for Tots program was first established in 1947 as a humble effort of Major Bill Hendricks of the United States Marine Corps Reserve to distribute toys to the less fortunate children of Los Angeles, California.
Since the beginning of the effort over 60 years ago, more than 370 million toys have been distributed to many, many less fortunate children and has garnered much praise and numerous awards for its efforts.
In keeping with this tradition, throughout December, the Marines collected toys donated by the American and local employees of the consulate. As a result of the community's effort, a number of smiling faces were to be found on Christmas Eve for the residents of small children's home in Khayelitsha.
