Fulbright Teacher Exchanges Draw to Year’s Close in South Africa

December 10, 2007

American Fulbright Teacher Kate Mahady, a social science teacher from Tucson, Arizona, has just completed a year-long teaching exchange at Refeng Thabo High School in the small rural town of Tweeling, in the Free State Province.

Although working at a school under-resourced not only in funds but also leadership and teaching capacity held many challenges, the year has been a very positive experience for all. Kate donated funds contributed by her home school in Arizona to enable the school to buy a security system which will allow the school to install 24 computers in a computer lab which has been unused for two years.

In 2008 Kate will return to Booth-Ficket Math/Science Magnet School, where her South African exchange partner, Alphios Mokoena, has been teaching this past year.
