Camp KUSASA
English, team-building and conflict management skills for seventh graders
November 23, 2007
Youth enrichment programs in the form of two English language and Social Values Summer Camps for severely underprivileged thirteen-year-olds were organized by the US Embassy’s Regional English Language Office. 120 learners from 4 primary schools in the "informal settlement" Mandela Village northeast of Pretoria participated in the camps at a scenic resort outside Pretoria.
US Embassy officers and family members, visiting American educators and South Africans who have visited the USA on Embassy sponsorship provided an entertaining and varied program. Sessions included the language of conflict management, descriptive writing, poetry and rap composition, American folk songs, study skills, outdoor team building exercises, eco-drives and walks, and orientation to community library services.
Ambassador Bost awarded certificates to the campers and the the four participating schools received classroom reading collections.
"KUSASA" is an isiZulu word meaning "tomorrow". It combines USA and SA, underscoring the broader partnership for educational development between the US and South Africa, and mutual understanding between the two nations.
