Former Police Chief Shares His Expertise

Overwhelming interest in U.S. Police Chief's Crime Prevention, Monitoring and Conviction Strategies

August 28, 2007

On August 22-23, Former Chapel Hill Police Chief, Gregg Jarvies, conducted Multi-Stakeholder workshops in Durban to address crime and security concerns in the Greater Durban Region and to review efforts to “take back the city.”

Representatives from the Metro Police and the SA Police Services, Community Police Forums, Station Commissioners, Business Against Crime, Durban Chamber of Commerce and from the various Specialized Crime Prevention Units participated in the workshops, which were organized by our Public Affairs Office in Durban.

Mr. Jarvis also met with the Durban eThekwini City Manager to share his 32 years' experience in addressing a wide range of policing issues in Chapel Hill, North Carolina. The use of advanced technology-based surveillance and control systems were reviewed during his meeting with the Managing Director of the Pavilion Shopping Mall, the second largest in South Africa.

Mr. Jarvies commended the efforts and partnership building programs currently in place among the various crime/security focused agencies that work together to address the numerous challenges facing local and provincial law enforcement service providers. The participant groups were impressed with the various crime prevention education programs used in Chapel Hill and by the use of appropriate technology to provide resources to make for more efficient policing.
