John Hughes Speaks On Covering The Big Story

August 28, 2007

Brigham Young University Professor of Communications John Hughes met with various media organizations and academic institutions during a visit to Johannesburg on July 16-24.

Hughes, who was editor of a newspaper in Salt Lake City during the 2002 Winter Olympics, gave talks on “covering a big story,” an issue of keen interest to South Africans in advance of the 2010 World Cup.

Hughes emphasized the importance of early preparations ahead of the event, such as possible re-structuring of newsrooms, and making contacts now with key organizations involved in the World Cup now so as to guarantee access later.

Our Public Affairs Office in Johannesburg, which organized the meetings, reports that Professor Hughes was a big hit everywhere he went, commenting that "leading editors from all of Johannesburg’s top papers scribbled notes throughout his presentations, and followed up with numerous logistical questions."
