Video Conference on Slavery
August 28, 2007
Fourteen University of Pretoria students and members of the Pretoria Chapter of the United Nations Association gathered at the Embassy on August 23 for a video conference on Slave Trade and its Abolition as part of the commemoration of the International Day of Remembrance of the Slave Trade and its Abolition.
This was the first in a two-part digital video conference with Ms. Diane Seligsohn, an American freelance journalist and film maker who is based in Paris. Ms. Seligsohn, who has recently completed the first in a series of documentaries on slave trade, gave an excellent global perspective and took the audience through the history of slavery throughout the world.
The participants, representing five African countries — Zambia, Zimbabwe, Nigeria, Rwanda and South Africa — plied the speaker with questions and offered their own opinions on slavery including current day slavery.
