American Library in Pretoria visits NGOs and Orphanages

August 14, 2007

Information Resource Officer Fenghua Wang and the American Library staffer Ruth Koko visited NGOs and orphanage homes in Eersterus, Pretoria on August 7.

Jesus Loves Voices Echoes is an orphanage home for children who were abandoned or abused by their families.  The orphanage now holds 120 children; most of them are HIV/AIDS positive. Circle of Life is a community HIV/AIDS support organization that provides a place where people living with HIV/AIDS can go and relax in an informal environment where they can share experiences and problems, and build new relationships.

About fifty-five children between the ages of 6 –14 and the staff members and volunteers from Circle of Life attended the screening of the American film “Like Mike,” which is about a thirteen-year-old orphan who realized his dreams of becoming a famous basketball player playing with the NBA's greatest and being adopted by his friend and hero.

The program also included a visit to the children’s day care center that looks after orphans during the day. Ms. Wang read story books to the 30 children between ages of 1-5 at the center.
