Fulbright Hays Seminar Arrives in South Africa

August 14, 2007

Sixteen American educators arrived in South Africa on July 15 for a month-long Fulbright Hays seminar funded by the Department of Education and organized by the U.S. Diplomatic Mission's Public Affairs Office (PAS/South Africa).

The project is focusing on academic achievement and work force development. The first leg of the journey, organized by PAS/Pretoria, took them to Pretoria and the North West and Limpopo provinces. Activities included panel discussions on access to education for disadvantaged populations and academic literacy for a multi-lingual society.

A site visit to Orbit College in Rustenburg highlighted a public-private partnership between the college and the platinum industry offering workspace and equipment to entrepreneurial students to design and produce jewelry. The educators each spent a day at one of four township schools where they taught a class, conducted workshops for the teachers, observed classes, and participated in a home visit hosted by South African teachers.
