International Leadership in Education Program

The International Leadership in Education Program (ILEP) of the Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs of the U.S. Department of State has been bringing outstanding secondary school teachers from the Near East, South and Southeast Asia to the United States since 2005, and has now expanded to also invite educators from South Africa, Ghana, Brazil, Bolivia, Ecuador and Senegal. The primary focus of ILEP is on best practices for the classroom teacher in the secondary school.

Although the program is open for a broad range of subjects, Fulbright South Africa focuses its recruitment on mathematics and science. During this next cycle, ILEP anticipates bringing outstanding international teachers to the U.S. for a five-month professional development program at a U.S. university, including coursework and intensive training in teaching methodologies, lesson planning, teaching strategies for their home environment, teacher leadership, as well as the use of computers for Internet and word processing as tools for teaching. The semester-long program, which will commence in January 2010 and conclude in May 2010, will also include an internship at a secondary school to engage participants actively with American teachers and students.
