A Night of African American Music
February 21, 2013
Strains of gospel, jazz and blues could be heard in Houghton last evening when Consul General Earl Miller hosted a celebration of African American music in honor of U.S. Black History Month. Well-known clarinetist Marcus Eley and pianist Mark Neiwirth performed and talked about the heritage and development of African American music, from slave-era songs of longing and escape to the more joyous tunes of Duke Ellington. Some 80 guests enjoyed the presentation and the chance to mingle afterwards at a reception. The two American musicians earlier in the week gave packed presentations at high schools, colleges and music academies around Johannesburg.
