On March 29, 2012, the Bloemfontein American Corner presented a Poetry Slam at the Mangaung Branch Library. IRC Assistant Chris du Plessis explained to the 20 high school students present that the poetry slam is the result of the African American History Month poetry competition run by PAS South Africa. Fulbright English Teaching Assistant (ETA) Nick Courtney, based at the University of the Free State, explained the origins of poetry slams and acted as facilitator. All the students performed their poems (some more than once) to great applause from their fellow students. The two young poets who entered the Black History Month Poetry Competition also performed their winning poems and members of the Mangaung Poetry Club who attended were presented with book vouchers to buy poetry anthologies for the club.
