Exploring Diversity and Tolerance on U.S. Campuses
September 10, 2010
70 first year students at Free State University, an institution that earned notoriety last year for race relation problems, visited the Consulate September 10 to obtain visas to conduct 2-week stays at several U.S. colleges to learn about campus diversity and tolerance issues in an American context. Consul General Andy Passen and PAS staff met with them after their successful visa interviews to talk about the university’s determination to become an institution that welcomes and promotes multiculturalism. The ensuing discussion looked at historical and contemporary efforts, both in South Africa and the U.S., to expand our societies’ understanding of diversity and the need for more inclusiveness.
