Consul General Helen La Lime Discusses Life and Love With Belhar High School Students
October 11, 2007
Helen La Lime, U.S. Consul General, Cape Town, visited Belhar High School in the Cape Flats Thursday, October 11, meeting with Grade 11 history learners. The exchange, which followed on a donation of books from the consulate to the school library several months previously, was an opportunity for CG La Lime to discuss teen life in the USA, and the various similarities and differences between being young in South Africa and young in the USA.
The discussion centered on the challenges and choices that young people face on both sides of the Atlantic, in particular with regard to education, consumerism, drugs, alcohol, sexual activity, and its consequences.
The Consul General noted that the struggle against HIV/AIDS and its ramifications remains far and away the highest priority activity of the U.S. Mission in South Africa, with the President’s Emergency Program For AIDS Relief (PEPFAR) at the center of this effort.
Both the CG and Belhar High School expressed optimism that this visit would be merely the first in a series of visits to the school.
